Our October imagineNATION Contest winner’s home underwent a “Back to the Future” style makeover.

Featured on the 1979 Parade of Homes tour, this custom house was deemed “state of the art” and “ahead of its time” because of its contemporary styling and passive solar design. A realtor bought it in the late 80s and has been updating it over the years to keep it on trend.

In 2000, she replaced the cedar exterior with stucco. Years later, she saw glass garage doors on another show home and it got her thinking about replacing her own wood doors with something sleek and modern that matched the architecture.

Thanks to Clopay Garage Doors Modern Steel Collection, the tan stucco house on the corner is now known as the contemporary house with the cool glass garage doors. Numerous times a day, cars slow down to look and compliment her on the eye-catching update. Should I Choose an Insulated Garage Door

For homes in areas that experience colder winters or hot summers--like Texas, choosing an insulated garage door can save you money on your energy bill and improve the comfort of your home. It can help keep your garage cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter, and keep any freezers or refrigerators kept in the garage from working quite so hard to keep things cold. An insulated garage also can keep rooms over the garage more comfortable.

Consider the fact that the garage door is the largest entry to most homes, so it's also the most susceptible to energy loss. Of course other variables can affect the temperature in your garage as well, such as insulation in the walls, ceiling, doors and windows. You can minimize energy loss and make your home more energy efficient with an insulated garage door. If you need natural light in your garage, insulated glass window options that can help maintain energy efficiency are also available.

So what makes an insulated garage door insulated? There are two types of insulated garage doors:

Polystyrene panels bonded to the inside of each panel and backed with either vinyl or steel on the inside of the garage door.
Polyurethane foam injected between the front and back steel panels of the garage door.

Just as you want your garage door system to operate properly every time you need it, you also want it to operate safely at all times.

After all, the garage door is the largest and heaviest moving object in most homes. It can cause injury or even death if damaged or misused.

Garage Door Care wants to make sure that you and your family know how to operate and maintain your garage door system safely at all times. You are the key to garage door safety.

Here are 10 things everyone in your household should know about garage door safety. It’s a good idea to review these with everyone in your household from time to time – especially children.

The garage door and garage door opener are not toys. They are dangerous if misused, and can cause serious injury or even death.
Children should never be allowed to play with the garage door or its operating system. Children should never stand, run or play under or near any garage door, especially when the door is open or moving. Learn more about garage door safety for children.
Adults should not allow children access to the remote controls or push button wall controls for garage door opener systems; these should be kept out of reach of children. The push button wall control for a garage door operating system should be mounted at least five feet off the floor, out of the reach of children. Learn more about garage door safety for children.
Never stand or walk under a moving garage door. Never try to enter or exit the garage by racing under a moving garage door.
When opening or closing the garage door, always keep the door in view until the door is fully opened or fully closed. Make certain that no adults, children or animals try to enter or exit while the door is closing.
Keep fingers and hands away from door sections when the door is opening or closing to avoid injury.

If someone has backed into the garage door (yes, it does happen – all of us are in a hurry at one time or another), it’s a good idea to have the door inspected and/or repaired by a trained service technician. New garage door not in the budget? Why not paint? Follow the painting instructions below for an affordable way to update the look of your home.. (If you haven’t already cleaned the door, it is best to do so before painting.)

Best practices for repainting steel garage doors

1. Review your garage door warranty and manufacturer guidelines regarding painting your door. High quality 100% acrylic latex exterior grade paint should be appropriate for most doors. Please note insulated doors may have specific paint color requirements in terms of the Light Reflectance Value (LRV) of the paint color. Again, check with the door manufacturer for specific requirements and to avoid any warranty issues.

Climate can affect your results, so best to paint your door on a mild, clear day.

2. Prepare the surface

Any steel door surface to be repainted must be properly prepared to assure the continued performance of the coating system. The following four problem areas must be addressed before repainting can begin.

Dirt and mildew: To prepare your door for repainting, it must first be properly cleaned. If dirt remains after following the cleaning practices above, it may be necessary to wash the door with a diluted solution of Spic and Span (1 cup into 5 gallons of warm water). Always rinse the surface thoroughly to remove any of the agents used in the cleaning procedure. Residual cleaners left on the surface will damage the adhesion of new paint.
Surface imperfections: Minor scratches can be lightly sanded or buffed to create a smoother surface. However, do not expose the metal beneath the painted surface. Once this exposed condition exists, the likelihood for rusting is greatly increased. If the metal substrate is exposed, see the following paragraph.
Exposed metal and rust: If you have exposed metal, do not destroy the galvanized surface. Use a dull putty knife to remove all loose residue and rust. Then use a primer specifically designed to protect exposed galvanized steel from further corrosion. Allow sufficient time for the primer to dry before applying the topcoat. See instructions below re masking off items not to be painted and wiping off primer that gets between sections and on trim before it dries. It may be best to apply primer one day, starting in the morning, then paint your door the next day to allow for sufficient drying time.

3. Painting

Use painter's tape to mask any exposed locks, handles, decorative hardware and windows. Also tape off the trim if you don't intend to paint it.
Paint your door early in the morning so it has time to dry before you need to secure your door at night.
Paint your garage door while it is closed, then immediately open it to the point where the inside joints are exposed (usually about ¾ of the way up). If any paint leaked into joints, wipe it out thoroughly. This is to prevent the sections from sticking together when paint is wet and during hot weather when the paint can get sticky.
Wipe away any paint that got on the inside of the PVC trim around the perimeter of the door. You can do this when the door is open. Also check that paint has not collected along the edge of the PVC. This is to prevent the trim from sticking to the door when it’s wet and during hot weather when the paint can get sticky.
Make sure your garage door and PVC trim are completely dry before closing the garage door.
Damage to your door due to improper painting will not be covered by your warranty.
